Situation Summary
The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), a unit of the United Nations, is working on a worldwide standard for international
wood shipments. In the interim, the European Union (EU) established Emergency Requirements that went into effect October 2001 that
govern imports to its 15 participating countries. Separately, the United States, under the Department of Agriculture APHIS program,
is developing restrictions that may be more stringent than those anticipated by the IPPC.
