Anything Is Possible; A Tribute To Prince

“Whenever we get tied down to anything- a name, a body, a lifestyle – that’s the road to ruination.” Prince I’m not a Prince fan. Missed that bus somehow. I have been impressed with the outpouring of tribute that’s occurred since his sudden death yesterday. I started jotting down some of his quotes and texting them to my kids. He had some profound thoughts. The one above seems like an “anything goes” kind of mindset

How The Best Teams Perform

Most folks watch ball games for simple enjoyment. They hope that the team they are pulling for wins and their favorite players perform well. I want those things too, but I try to pay attention to details about how the best teams perform. Coach Mike Krzyzewski, the great college and Olympic basketball coach says there are 5 fundamental qualities that make every team great: Communication-how well do the teammates talk with each other? Do key messages

Ways To Express Humility

Read an internet post recently which stated that being humble isn’t soft or meek. To be humble is a choice. It always calls for taking a steeper path. A path which initially calls for deferring gratification for the sake of others. Deferring gratification calls for will. To seek to understand more calls for courage. It’s patience rather than impulse. All in all, humility is a pathway to toughness and resilience. Here are some ways humility

14 Ways To Acquire Knowledge

I follow a website called Brain Pickings which is edited by Maria Popova. She mines historical writings that interests her and posts them. This week came a list created by James Magnan in 1936 in a book called “You Can Do Anything”. I’m sharing her edited work about this writing.  Leaders learn. People “who happen to the world” are always finding new ways to change. These thoughts got me thinking about the ways we learn

What You Know Ain’t Always So…

Mark Twain said this: “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble.  It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” We are trained by our schooling to “know” the answers. We get rewarded for raising our hands, getting called upon and giving the answer out loud. By doing so, we receive admiration from the authorities, regard from our peers and we establish a pattern for life: answers are good. As you

Resist The Drift Into “Same Old Thing”

I’ve visited two small plants in the last week. Our Douglas, GA plant is a new location to us. It is recycling pallets gathered from the growing distribution sector in South Georgia. The other is Waterloo, WI which is a plant newly re-purposed to handle industrial byproducts from throughout the Midwest. Both visits were a “breath of fresh air.” Why? The teams were small – less than 10 people. There is a camaraderie that exists

Beware of “Willful Blindness”

I heard an author Margaret Heffernan on a podcast describe something called “willful blindness.” She sees the phenomena in many organizations. It is when people see something or know something that should be addressed and chose not to say anything about it. They ignore it. Act like it’s not there. Therefore, they are willfully blind. In a typical organization, she says up to 85% of the people will be willfully blind. She has studied this

Remain Humble and Hungry For Success

Here’s something I’ve noticed about this year’s NCAA basketball tournament: There are teams with players you’ve never heard of and coaches you’ve never heard of who are wreaking havoc on more notable players and coaches. Also,  the difference between those players and coaches you’ve heard of and those you haven’t heard of isn’t often discernible to the naked eye. So, no matter your reputation and record, you can assume there is competition gunning for you.

‘Cost of Doing Business’ With Others Should Be Low

Several times in the last week I’ve had to explain the concept of one’s “cost to do business with”. I became aware of the idea when I read an article by Tim Sanders, he introduced it in his book Love Is the Killer App. I’ve written and taught about it frequently. It’s worth repeating. Here’s the idea. Everyone makes a contribution to an enterprise. You use your time, talent, energy – any of your resources

Pay Attention To Your ANEW Skills

Writer/speaker  says the way to increase your learning is to pay attention to your ANEW skills. Her’s what she means: Aspiration- to aspire to learn is to be ambitious for adding to your skill set and being intentional about doing so Neutral Self-awareness- to be humble in assessment of what you know and what you think you know. Learners enter every training opportunity with an appreciation for the benefit of coaching. They know that there

THE JUICE IS WORTH THE SQUEEZE

“Everything you want is on the other side of ‘hard’.” – CJ McCollum, NBA player McCollum is a story of overachievement.  He was undersized.  Played college basketball at a non-descript school.  Was a long shot to be an NBA player but worked his way to being a first-round draft pick and was a solid star in his 10th year in the league. I heard him describe his approach to the game and his development on a podcast called

SUFFERING AND CHALLENGES

“Weep, trust, pray, think, shift, hope, grow. Ways to handle suffering.” – Tim Keller Tim Keller was a preacher from New York City. He passed away in 2023. I followed him on Twitter because he tweeted profound thoughts like the one above. You don’t exit life without tough things happening to you. It’s a fact. None of us are exempt. In specific order, Keller gave us seven verbs to consider when challenged: Weep – It’s
