On this Thankful Thursday, I’m thankful I live in America. I hope you are, too!
We just finished a free election. There will be an orderly transition from one leader to another. Maybe you’re delighted. Maybe you’re horrified. But, like me, you probably woke up last week, and not much had changed.
That’s the thing about America. You have a lot of choices and a lot of opportunities.
Candidly, the chances aren’t equal. I was born into a family that emphasized the importance of education. When I reached adulthood, I was a capable reader and writer. I could add, subtract, multiply, and divide. I could even solve an algebraic equation. It gave me a leg up.
That said, I’ve met folks who didn’t have the same start but, through hard work, strong character, and good fortune, surpassed anything I accomplished.
The reverse is also true. I know people with every advantage who lost it all because they behaved as if success would come easy. If you have an edge, back it up with hard work.
The truth is, you have more say over your accomplishments, contentment, and achievements than whoever the president is. And this country gives you more opportunity to succeed than any other.
You are free to learn. The variety of educational opportunities available today is unparalleled. It’s up to you to take advantage of them.
You are free to move. Your feet aren’t nailed to the ground. If an opportunity arises in another state or city, you can go there.
You have the ability to build a support system. Teachers, bosses, and customers reward effort, value, and integrity. You control how much you learn, how far you go, and the value you deliver.
Parents play a vital role in their children’s success. Read to your kids. Show them the possibilities. Make sacrifices to give them an edge.
In America, you are also free to explore your faith. Read the books that inspire you. Worship in ways that revive your spirit. Build relationships with others who support and encourage you.
Yes, I’m grateful for my country. The opportunities are abundant, and it’s our privilege to pursue them.
