The effort is working.

Our frequency of accidents continues to drop this year as compared to last year.

It could be dumb luck, but I don’t think so. As I travel around and visit with plant leaders, you frequently point to plant and individual safety as being a key to work satisfaction.

Put simply, if you are scared at work, you will find something else to do.

The key to improved safety is making it a “top of mind” priority.

Better or worse?

One of the questions you are asked each year in our annual plant survey is whether you are clear about what is expected of you.

Years ago, when I was an HR Pro, I worked with supervisors and managers to find a way to summarize what we look for from our employees.  We came up with a list of 10 Commitments that we would like each team member to embrace. You may have seen them printed up somewhere in your facility.

When it comes to a job

In a Harvard Business Review article written by Lori Goler, Janelle Gale, Brynn Harrington and Adam Grant, the authors referred to some surveys they do at Facebook which collects information on what their employees want.

According to the authors, they found very little difference among employees of all ages and occupations. When it comes to a job, every employee seeks a career, a community, and a cause.

Career means meaningful work. They want their job to matter.

“You reap what you sow.”

“You reap what you sow.”

In the Bible, they call that the Law of the Harvest. The idea is that we can only expect the fruit that comes from the seed you sow.

Sowing is a planting term. It suggests that you “cast” seed “broadly.” So, the harvest we receive someday will depend on how much and what kind of seed you sow today.

So, what kind of harvest/results are you looking for?

Let’s set a record this year!

We had no accidents company-wide in week four. So far, we have reduced our corporate rate by 50% in 2018.

Daily reminders to be safe are powerful. Verbalizing encouragement to be safe, reminders of risky situations and cautions when we anticipate safety issues will make a difference.

Effective teams talk to each other about the important things that make success occur. They repeat them. They acknowledge each other.

Use your two-minute talks daily to speak out loud about safety.

Setting a good example is not a “put-on.”

Our Safety leader leads our safety efforts at the four treating plants. He says the following is the first thoughts he shares with his teammates. He gave me permission to share it with all of you:

This is the first safety minute I put out every year:

BEING THE EXAMPLE:

Setting a good example is not a “put-on.”  It’s simply working safety into your daily routine at home and on the job.

Organization Coach

There is a common perception these days that the path to mastery includes putting in 10,000 hours of practice.

The theory includes a couple of qualifiers.  The 10,000 hours is best when the practice is the focused as compared to going through the motions. Focused means striving with specific improvement in mind. The 10,000 hours are also more effective when a “coach” is involved. Someone who watches. Someone who guides. Someone who challenges.

“Tour Ready”

I’ve been attending a national pallet meeting and plant tour this week. Several hundred have gathered in Houston, TX. We were able to see three pallet plants and a logistics operation.

Tours are a great unifier. When they are well done, the whole plant gets a lift. The tours remind everyone that their jobs are interesting to others and there is pep in the steps of the participants.

In our organization,
