WHEN THINGS GET HECTIC…

The last time you observed or were involved in an accident: did it feel like you were in heavy traffic? I live near Mickey Mouse land and the traffic worsens here every year.  Traffic jams are frustrating. Movement is slowed.  Time is wasting.  You fill crowded and irritated. Our mind tells us to do something!  Free things up!  Make something happen! You begin considering driving on the shoulder?  Crossing the median? Cutting off the less

OUR GUATEMALA TEAM ENRICHED WITH JOY IN THEIR WORK…

As I mentioned, there are 40 people on our mission team in Guatemala. While most are skilled medical pros, the primary criteria for making the team is that they “want” to be here. Some have retired.  It’s the only week they provide medical care all year.  The equipment is mostly “older school”.  They aren’t working in the well-equipped setting they usually find at home. We don’t come here knowing what we will find, so there’s

When was hope introduced into your vocabulary?

When was Hope introduced into your vocabulary? If you’re like me, it was when you were a young kid. I think my Mom taught it to me. When I wanted something, but she knew it wasn’t going to happen, she might say “we can hope” We could “hope” someone could get well.  We could “hope” someone would win.  We could hope someone might come for a visit or go out for dinner.  There was always

HOW DOES YOUR PERFORMANCE CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR ORGANIZATION?

“If you don’t know why it’s working well when it’s working well, you can’t fix it when it breaks.” Andy Stanley Candidly, there are a lot of things in my world that I’m not sure how they work. I get in car and push a button, I hope it works. I flip a switch on my heater/air conditioner, I hope it does the right thing. The list goes on and on. But, taken in context

“TRYING” TAKES COURAGE…

Robert Redford, the great actor, has a new movie out and he says it will be his last.  The announcement has created several interviews on television.  In one, he shared a quote that has inspired him through the years: “For us it’s only the trying, the rest is not our business.” T.S. Eliot Eliot’s quote reminds us the importance of taking the initiative in matters.  Until you try, you never know what the result. “Trying”

DEVELOPMENT STARTS WITH A HAVING A PLAN…

How much of your time do you devote to development? Development happens in multiple dimensions. You can develop spiritually by taking time to meditate or pray.  By reading spiritually derived books. You can develop physically by undertaking an exercise program designed to build endurance and strength.  Combine it with exercise program to develop the right balance of health measurements designed to extend your capabilities and you’re kicking with gas. You can develop emotionally by identifying attributes

POSITIVE PLANT TOUR FEEDBACK ALWAYS WELCOME

One of the ways we get feedback is by opening our plants to visitors. I’ve heard about two this week: One was in Selma. A pallet company owner came to visit.  He has 120 employees and ships 60 loads of pallets a week.  A formidable pallet operation.  It was his first visit to a PalletOne facility.  I happened to be there as he completed the tour.  As he began the tour, he said, “I’ve got

The effort is working.

Our frequency of accidents continues to drop this year as compared to last year. It could be dumb luck, but I don’t think so. As I travel around and visit with plant leaders, you frequently point to plant and individual safety as being a key to work satisfaction. Put simply, if you are scared at work, you will find something else to do. The key to improved safety is making it a “top of mind”

Better or worse?

One of the questions you are asked each year in our annual plant survey is whether you are clear about what is expected of you. Years ago, when I was an HR Pro, I worked with supervisors and managers to find a way to summarize what we look for from our employees.  We came up with a list of 10 Commitments that we would like each team member to embrace. You may have seen them printed up

THE JUICE IS WORTH THE SQUEEZE

“Everything you want is on the other side of ‘hard’.” – CJ McCollum, NBA player McCollum is a story of overachievement.  He was undersized.  Played college basketball at a non-descript school.  Was a long shot to be an NBA player but worked his way to being a first-round draft pick and was a solid star in his 10th year in the league. I heard him describe his approach to the game and his development on a podcast called

HAPPENING TO THE WORLD – A SATISFYING WAY TO LIVE

PalletOne leaders “happen to the world.” What does that mean? A PalletOne leader is confident. Each situation creates an opportunity for service and contribution. We are talented and put those talents to work. We see those around us as having talent. We seek to unlock it. We realize that we can be called upon to take the initiative to improve things at any moment. We act when the situation calls for it. We inspire through

SUFFERING AND CHALLENGES

“Weep, trust, pray, think, shift, hope, grow. Ways to handle suffering.” – Tim Keller Tim Keller was a preacher from New York City. He passed away in 2023. I followed him on Twitter because he tweeted profound thoughts like the one above. You don’t exit life without tough things happening to you. It’s a fact. None of us are exempt. In specific order, Keller gave us seven verbs to consider when challenged: Weep – It’s
