Our forefathers got it right when they decided to set aside a day to express our gratitude.
Think about that time. Many who came were disenfranchised. They were seeking a place for a “fresh start.” Some came because of a courageous choice. Some came because they had no choice.
Starting from scratch is not for the faint of heart. To build places out of the dirt, discover food, grapple with tough environments takes a “hopeful” approach. Good things came their way but not without trials.
But, upon reflection, they paused to consider “who has it better than us?”
To be planted during these resources, surrounded by people who shared their commitment and could reap the rewards unavailable in their previous setting inspired gratitude.
I believe living in America is still the best deal going. No denying there are issues confronting us, but upon reflection, there aren’t any places that afford the freedoms, the resources for success and open door to use those resources as we have in America.
My list of things I’m grateful runs long:
My wife of 40 plus years.
My loving family.
Friends who will come running for me.
An unbelievable bounty of colleagues who inspire me at work every day.
Freedom to own my Bible and read it at will.

Researchers say that counting our blessings opens our heart and prepares our mind to live a full life. So, here’s to reflecting and giving thanks. Happy Thanksgiving.
