RESOLUTIONS – PART 6 – IS THIS WHAT I WANT TO BE?

Jocko Willink, a former Navy Seal who speaks and writes about leadership and discipline, asserts you will grow if you ask yourself seven questions every day and then act accordingly, based on your answers.

I will spend the next few days reviewing each question one at a time. Here’s the sixth question:

Is this what I want to be?

What is your ambition? What are your goals? Are you on a path to take you there?

Many of us start jobs trying to take care of our basic needs. Cover our bills. Put food on the table. Try to make ends meet.

But we’re designed to grow. At some point, there are places you aspire to live. With people that you care about. Making a difference that is more than a check. Building a career that offers satisfaction and joy.

“Am I doing what I want to do?” should be a question that is never far away. Sometimes, we will be in a dead spot. The questions we’ve asked so far contribute mightily to whether you are being what you want to be.

I’ve been in my job for 40 years. I’m very fortunate. I learn every day. I feel like I impact others positively. I get to be creative and involved in building something that matters.

I want our organization to do the same for you.

You have to be willing to grow. Take on training—volunteer for different roles. Be willing to step up. Be engaged. Be open.

And if those things don’t confirm that you’re in the right place, you may need to form a new plan.

We’re going to work hard to offer opportunities to fulfill your ambition.
