THE RESPONSIBILITY OF LEADERSHIP

“A player doesn’t do things for one of two reasons only. Either he doesn’t know or he doesn’t feel like it. It’s a leader’s job to make sure they know and to motivate them to feel like it.” – Chip Kelley, UCLA head football coach

The responsibility of leadership has been growing. These days the level of preparation people bring to work effectively is different. While we wish folks entered our workspace fully ready to perform, we are finding we have to train more fundamental skills and teach folks how to be good teammates.

Kelley hits on the essentials. When we are clear that our teammates need to be influenced by us to grow in their work and to strive to improve, we begin to make progress.

We need to recruit folks who have the right gut values. All we can get. But the world has folks who still need to be taught. It’s our path to success.
