I got a quick response to last night’s HQ Note from a colleague.
He served our country in the Navy Seals. He has stories to tell but most are “top secret”.
He offered an insight into his training as related to last night’s message about making safety briefings count:
“In the SEAL Teams this is something we live by. It doesn’t matter how many times you have done an activity, there is always a safety brief. This goes for missions too. Every brief you get audience participation. This helps insure you have everyone’s attention. Our saying is “You don’t rise to the occasion but revert to you training”.
He reminds us that we don’t do smart, heroic things by accident. You have to put in the work. You have to amass the knowledge. You practice. You learn. And, when you’re called to act, you pull it out from inside.
Since 2005, he has been sharing his thoughts on the organization, leadership, and communication in an online daily note to teammates called Daily with HQ.
