Do All You Can

It’s a Holy Week for many of the faithful this week. Observances like these cause us to move beyond our self into the world around us. Despite the challenges that you may be facing, it’s a fair observation to consider whether you could find a better place than our place in America to face those challenges. We are fortunate to live where we live and to be able to pursue life as we do here.

Wisdom For Parents With Kids On The Field

If you have children or grandchildren who participate in sports or other performances, I saw a sign recently that might be enlightening. It said: “Your child’s success or lack of success in sports does not give an indication of what kind of parent you are. But having an athlete who is coachable, respectful, a great teammate, mentally tough, resilient and tries his very best is a direct reflection of your parenting.” I’ve booked a great

Words To Live By

“If you concentrate on three things, first to be all you can be; second, to never give up and third, to give more than you take-you’ll make a difference in your life and the lives of others.” – -Stanford N. Phelps I’m at a meeting today at Polk State College in Bartow. The campus is on property donated by Mr. Phelps and his land development company Clear Springs. His quote is posted in the lobby.

Lessons Learned

I got this in an email from a colleague in Siler City. The learnings, said to be crafted by the late Andy Rooney, are worth pondering. “I am not sure that Rooney uttered all these phrases, although it certainly sounds like him. The subjects covered affect us all on a daily basis. I’ve learned …. That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person. I’ve learned …. That when

Taking Action Brings Hope

How are you today? Answers may vary. I hope you are enthused, engaged and energized. But, chances are there are other descriptions. Maybe you’re bored. Maybe you’re stressed. Maybe you feel lifeless. When things aren’t well, what do you do? Here’s an observation from psychologist and writer Viktor Frankl. “Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answers to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets before each individual.”

Remembering Dean Smith: A Hero On and Off The Court

By now, you know I admire and study coaches. Dean Smith, who died Saturday at the age of 83, is the one I admire most. I’ve quoted him often in these notes. I began to follow him over 50 years. I was a nine year old falling in love with basketball. Smith was a creative, young coach at the University of North Carolina frequently mentioned in sports magazines. I read all I could about him

Learning Brings Change

Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida, indicated recently that he is considering running for President. (This isn’t a political piece). I was reading a profile about how some of his positions on issues have changed since he entered politics 20 plus years ago. Critics will call it “flip flopping”. In the article one of Bush’s advisors, Allison DeFoor responded this way: “He does not flip flop. He learns. And, when he learns, he changes.”

Experience Prepare Us For What’s Ahead

Franklin Roosevelt was stricken with polio when he was in his 30’s. He lost the use of his legs overnight, never to regain it. Many people would have resigned themselves to a life of disability. Roosevelt would not. He spent the next years working to strengthen his upper body and figuring how to adapt to the world. Within seven years, he was elected governor of New York and within 11 he was President of the

Go Forward With Faith

“Let us move forward with a strong and active faith.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt I spent some time during the holidays watching a Public Broadcast Service on the Roosevelts -Theodore (TR)and Franklin (FDR). It described their path to the presidency and the challenges they encountered. If you are like me and tuned out of history in high school, watching this series was a great education. FDR was elected president for four terms and died early

Focus On The Present

“Be where your feet are.”  Alabama football coach Nick Saban’s advice to his team. Be present. Focus on your surroundings. Don’t worry about what could happen. Be focused on what is in front of you. Don’t look ahead too far. Too much anticipation could cause you to miss an important step necessary to achieve what you hoped to achieve. Don’t let your mind wander backward to regret. To get stuck on “woulda”, “coulda” and “shoulda”

THE JUICE IS WORTH THE SQUEEZE

“Everything you want is on the other side of ‘hard’.” – CJ McCollum, NBA player McCollum is a story of overachievement.  He was undersized.  Played college basketball at a non-descript school.  Was a long shot to be an NBA player but worked his way to being a first-round draft pick and was a solid star in his 10th year in the league. I heard him describe his approach to the game and his development on a podcast called

SUFFERING AND CHALLENGES

“Weep, trust, pray, think, shift, hope, grow. Ways to handle suffering.” – Tim Keller Tim Keller was a preacher from New York City. He passed away in 2023. I followed him on Twitter because he tweeted profound thoughts like the one above. You don’t exit life without tough things happening to you. It’s a fact. None of us are exempt. In specific order, Keller gave us seven verbs to consider when challenged: Weep – It’s
