“The Difference Between The Privileged And The Impoverished”

“The difference between the privileged and the impoverished are the number of chances they get.” Malcolm Gladwell When I heard this, Gladwell was relating it to being born in the right place at the right time. His point is, that if you come from a privileged background, you have more opportunity than one coming from a poor neighborhood. Hard to dispute that. But, it got me thinking about opportunity. The Bible has a great story

“Success Is Hard”

Jess Henderson, from our Selma team, sent this to me. I wanted to share it with you.  It’s a blog post from Darren Hardy, a best selling author and publisher. Let me quote it: “Success is hard. Be thankful. Difficulty is the high fence that keeps out the weak, wannabes and pretenders. Which means more for the rest of us (achievers). I love it when things are hard. I can do hard, and I know most won’t.

True. Kind. Helpful.

I heard about an Arabian proverb. It says: the tongue has three watchmen. Before you speak, you must answer the question each watchman asks. Watchman 1: Is it the truth? The truth is always the best place to start. I suspect every person has had a negative experience of saying something that wasn’t truthful. Watchman 2: Is it kind? This reminds us to think before we speak. I’ve hurt people by replying quickly with sarcasm.

“Treat People As If They Were What They Ought To Be”

“Treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and you help them become what they are capable of being.”-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe  I’ve heard a variation of this theme three times this week. I regard it as a “sign” that I should share.  Goethe’s idea is that people tend to rise up to how you expect them to perform.  My first reminder of this theme came from educator Vanessa Siddle Walker. She

What Causes You to Change?

What causes you to change? You learn something new. Whether through experience or purposeful endeavor, you make the decision to change because of the knowledge you gain. I believe that change is inevitable. Try as we might, there is little chance of keeping something the same way over time. So things are getting better, or they are getting worse. Our challenge is to strive for better rather than drift to worse. There are several pieces

Leadership and Achievement

If you’re a fan of leadership and achievement, you may want to take a few minutes to listen to the tributes to Pat Summitt that will be on all the news and sports channels in the next couple of days. She died this morning at the age of 64. Summitt was the head coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team. Her teams won national championships and Olympic Gold medals. She has the winningest record

“He Led With A Smile.”

“He led with a smile.” That was a description used for a chairman of a group to which I belong who was ending a term of service. It struck me as I heard it. What a great description! In his case, the “smile” communicated much. Optimism. Openness. Inclusiveness. The “smile” symbolized a cultivated style. He intended to lead that way. His “smile” let everyone know his intentions. But, here’s a question: how is your leadership

Success Seems To Be Connected With Action

Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit. Conrad Hilton, hotelier There’s a popular media trend these days where celebrities will write a letter to their “younger” selves. I always find them interesting to read. One theme that comes up is that the experienced, successful celebrity will tell her “younger” self that the predicament or situation they encountered early in their career won’t turn out

To handle others, use your heart.” Eleanor Roosevelt Eleanor Roosevelt was married to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the longest serving President in United States history. She was known for her political savvy and her acts of service during the Great Depression and World War II which earned her admiration. Her ideas about using your head and your heart to govern your actions deserves consideration. To be the best we can

“Five Minute Walk”

One of the techniques introduced in leadership training this year is the “Five Minute Walk”. Here’s the concept: a group of three to five people get together to observe an operation or area in the plant. They are together but they remain silent. The goal is to “look” with fresh eyes and to “listen” with fresh ears. The goal is to “notice” what we usually walk by. To see and to hear the things which

THE JUICE IS WORTH THE SQUEEZE

“Everything you want is on the other side of ‘hard’.” – CJ McCollum, NBA player McCollum is a story of overachievement.  He was undersized.  Played college basketball at a non-descript school.  Was a long shot to be an NBA player but worked his way to being a first-round draft pick and was a solid star in his 10th year in the league. I heard him describe his approach to the game and his development on a podcast called

SUFFERING AND CHALLENGES

“Weep, trust, pray, think, shift, hope, grow. Ways to handle suffering.” – Tim Keller Tim Keller was a preacher from New York City. He passed away in 2023. I followed him on Twitter because he tweeted profound thoughts like the one above. You don’t exit life without tough things happening to you. It’s a fact. None of us are exempt. In specific order, Keller gave us seven verbs to consider when challenged: Weep – It’s
