Impossible

I was out of town last week so I missed the many tributes to Muhammad Ali in the media. Here’s one of his quotes that was mentioned: ” is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they have been given than to explore the power they have to change it.” Muhammad Ali “Impossible”, a big word that immobilizes people. I’ve lived a long time

Triangle of Well Being

In Henry Cloud’s book The Power of the Other, he writes about the work of Daniel Siegel from UCLA. Siegel puts forth the idea of a “Triangle of Well Being.” He says that there are three elements that work together that help each person create a better quality of life. The three things are: Our physical brain/body Our minds Our relationships Cloud takes this idea and uses it to explain how people become the best

Teamwork Inspires

I’m away this week on a medical mission to Guatemala. You are correct to wonder what I contribute to a medical mission. I have no skills in that area. I wash dishes. We feed close to 40 team mates a couple of meals a day. I make sure the dishes are cleaned in a sanitary way so when we use them again, no one gets sick. I accompany the cooks as they shop for food.

Feedback Encourages

Have you received feedback in the last seven days? Great teams and great companies build feedback into their makeup. Feedback encourages. Feedback is instructive. Feedback inspires concentrated effort. Feedback allows room to correct slights and shortcomings. Feedback creates an atmosphere of appreciation. Feedback builds trust. Feedback solidifies teams. Feedback verifies to others that their contributions matter. Rather than count the times I receive feedback, I’m working on taking the opportunities to give feedback. I’m mentioning

Maturity

I stay on the lookout for quotes to share with my kids. This is one I found. The source was Dear Abby, an advice columnist from many years ago.  “This is maturity: to be able to stick with a job until it is finished, to do one’s duty without being supervised, to be able to carry money without spending it and to be able to bear an injustice without wanting to get even.”  Sticking with

“Human Guinea Pig.”

I listened to a podcast where author A.J. Jacobs described his experiences as a “human Guinea pig.” Jacobs wrote a book about a time where he did experiments every single day in an effort to better himself. Doing experiments regularly is one of the concepts which lean manufacturing is built upon. The idea is that if you routinely study the way things are done, you can find small ways in which you can improve them.

Performance Feedback

I’ve been travelling around this spring and visiting our plants. I’ve been reviewing the numbers from the “engagement survey” we had you complete.  We made a commitment to share only the numbers from a specific plant with the team associated with the plant so I won’t be providing results.  But, my summary would be that your response was positive and you helped us to identify areas for improvement. In every single plant, one area where

Comfort is Boring

Heard a great message from John Hambrick who is a psychologist. He was sharing about how people who are able should step up when they can help improve a situation. He was asked why people hold back from addressing difficult situations. He said there are three: First, he said people withhold help because it’s not convenient. To take a detour from a normal routine to help others can take you off schedule. It can cost

Intelligent, Energetic, And Moral

Charlie Munger is Vice-Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and shared the stage with Warren Buffett at the annual shareholders meeting I attended in Omaha.   Munger, who is 92 years old, let Buffett do most of the talking but Warren always asked him if he had anything to add. Frequently he did. His quotes during the event were often noteworthy.   At one point, the two engaged in a discussions about moral failure. Buffett referred to a deceitful

Resist The Drift Into “Same Old Thing”

I’ve visited two small plants in the last week. Our Douglas, GA plant is a new location to us. It is recycling pallets gathered from the growing distribution sector in South Georgia. The other is Waterloo, WI which is a plant newly re-purposed to handle industrial byproducts from throughout the Midwest. Both visits were a “breath of fresh air.” Why? The teams were small – less than 10 people. There is a camaraderie that exists

THE JUICE IS WORTH THE SQUEEZE

“Everything you want is on the other side of ‘hard’.” – CJ McCollum, NBA player McCollum is a story of overachievement.  He was undersized.  Played college basketball at a non-descript school.  Was a long shot to be an NBA player but worked his way to being a first-round draft pick and was a solid star in his 10th year in the league. I heard him describe his approach to the game and his development on a podcast called

SUFFERING AND CHALLENGES

“Weep, trust, pray, think, shift, hope, grow. Ways to handle suffering.” – Tim Keller Tim Keller was a preacher from New York City. He passed away in 2023. I followed him on Twitter because he tweeted profound thoughts like the one above. You don’t exit life without tough things happening to you. It’s a fact. None of us are exempt. In specific order, Keller gave us seven verbs to consider when challenged: Weep – It’s
