Business and Basketball

I’m thinking about the matchups in the NBA playoffs this week between Oklahoma City and Miami. You are probably wondering what that has to do with us. Basketball is a game that flows. What marks the game is that there is constant motion. Because there is constant motion there is constant adjustment. The coach makes adjustments with personnel and strategy throughout the game. But, the coach’s call only begins the complexity. As soon as the

The Importance of Building a Culture

I read an article about building a culture that caused me to think about what we are doing in our company. It supports the idea of building a strong culture because people thrive in strong cultures. It’s good for us. It is what makes us human. According to Mark Pagel, an evolutionary biologist, we are “wired” for connection. Because we are “wired” for connection, we are attracted to people and teams that have similar goals,

In Basketball and Business, “Do Your Job”

I’m watching the NBA playoffs. There’s a game every night and it’s winding down to the finals. I heard Erik Spoelstra, the coach of the Miami Heat, implore his team: “Do your job.” In basketball, that means a number of things. Cover your man. Rebound. Take good shots when you’re open. Execute the game plan. In professional basketball, coaches can use the short hand, saying “do your job,” because they spend hours studying film, crafting

Having a Great First Hour

I shared with you how important a “quick start” is every day. The second part of a “quick start” is focusing on having a “great first hour.” There is nothing worse than having a balky start with inconsistent results in the first hour. Once you get behind, it is difficult to make up ground. A bad first hour will cause a variety of things: unplanned overtime, multiple changeovers, a bad climate fueled by pressure and

The Power of the “Mission Focused” Team

The mission team I’ve been working with in Guatemala completed the regimen of surgeries yesterday. When all was said and done, 96 were completed. All successfully. That’s four surgeons full time and another working daily in a clinic turned to a mini surgery room. The team includes folks from Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, California and Montana. Most knew somebody and several knew nobody as they arrived. In the morning after chapel session, the team

Becoming Indispensible to Customers

Today, I had the honor of being part of a customer panel for Insurance Office of America, who handles our commercial insurance as well as our benefits. I joined four others and we fielded questions on how we viewed the industry and gave pointers on how IOA’s sales force could improve their effectiveness. My primary contact at IOA is John Lahey. He has been the insurance agent I’ve done business with for almost 30 years.

Being Open to Ideas from Everyone

The best ideas don’t always come from the guys in the office or from the people in charge. Once upon a time, I was part of a team that received an extraordinary opportunity. A customer called, told us that they had received a big order and they needed as many pallets as we could build as fast as we could build them. That had never happened to us before. It has not happened since. Excited

Teams with “Pride” Win

A note in the locker room of the Miami Heat, a National Basketball Association team, says this: “When two teams meet that are equal in ability and execution, it’s the team that has pride that wins.” We use “pride” a great deal to describe someone who has an unsinkable character. These words add up to PRIDE: Persistent. You stay with a task however difficult. Responsible. You can be counted on to be in the right

Lessons from March Madness

March Madness is done. The top seed Kentucky wins. Ken Delle Donne, the general manager of our treating operations, won the pool. Congratulations Ken. In the aftermath, I listened to the comments made by the players and coaches. Under the leadership of coach John Calipari, Kentucky has been known to sign the top-ranked recruits, see them play one year, then forego the balance of their college eligibility to go professional. The “rap” on that approach

Creating a “Lean” Culture

I sat glued to the television watching basketball last weekend. All my favorite teams advanced. I love watching the coaches. There are those I have seen for years. There are always some new faces as well. You get glimpses of how they conduct themselves in the timeout huddles, how they speak in the locker rooms, how they encourage and teach during the course of the action. Very few stand idle. Most are engaged with getting

THE JUICE IS WORTH THE SQUEEZE

“Everything you want is on the other side of ‘hard’.” – CJ McCollum, NBA player McCollum is a story of overachievement.  He was undersized.  Played college basketball at a non-descript school.  Was a long shot to be an NBA player but worked his way to being a first-round draft pick and was a solid star in his 10th year in the league. I heard him describe his approach to the game and his development on a podcast called

SUFFERING AND CHALLENGES

“Weep, trust, pray, think, shift, hope, grow. Ways to handle suffering.” – Tim Keller Tim Keller was a preacher from New York City. He passed away in 2023. I followed him on Twitter because he tweeted profound thoughts like the one above. You don’t exit life without tough things happening to you. It’s a fact. None of us are exempt. In specific order, Keller gave us seven verbs to consider when challenged: Weep – It’s
