A Tribute to Stephen Covey

Stephen Covey passed away on Monday. If you haven’t heard of him, he wrote one of the greatest leadership books of all time: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I read the book in the late 1980s. It has sold over 20 million copies and is still in print over 20 years after its original publication. For a number of years, I would give the book to folks graduating from college or high school.

Gaining Perspective from History

I have been reading a bit of history this summer. One book, “Parting the Waters” by Taylor Branch, is a historical classic recounting the times of the Civil Rights fight in the late 50’s and 60’s. Figures such as Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson all play key roles as well as many more folks you probably haven’t heard about. A second book, called “Game Change” by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin,

Enemies of Success

My longtime partner Gus King reads these notes and comments on them. He should. He taught me and we learned how to work effectively for a long time. He sent some advice he read that resonated with him, written by author Chuck Gallozzi: Enemies of Success Procrastination. In order to get what you want, you have to learn to do what you don’t feel like doing. Develop self-discipline. Too much planning and studying and not

Don’t Give Up on Change

Change isn’t easy. One of the things that makes it difficult is that the outcomes you seek with change don’t always come that easy. In fact, most often they don’t come easy at all. I experience it this way. I accepted the weight loss challenge. I changed what I’m eating – mostly giving up things I enjoy. In exchange for this significant sacrifice, this monumental change of direction, I expected significant, monumental results. After two

The Fuel to Find a Way Home

An article in my local newspaper The Ledger was brought to my attention. A truck driver for Publix, a regional grocer, had set a safety record. 36 years! More than 3 million miles! No accidents. As someone who has had multiple accidents driving (when you see me sometime, I can tell you stories), that kind of driving safety speaks volumes. The driver wasn’t lucky. He was intentional about safety. He took his job to heart.

A Belated Happy Father’s Day

A belated Happy Father’s Day to all of you fathers out there. I hope that you received all the honor and praise that was due from your children. If your father was about to be honored, I hope you took time to salute him. The latest societal trends in America indicate that there is a real crisis occurring when it comes to fathers. 25% of kids are being raised by single mothers. In certain impoverished

Virtues for Which You Will be Remembered

One of the guys I follow on Twitter is Andy Andrews, an author of inspirational books. He tweeted this last week: “Quality Work, Healthy Relationships, Good Manners, Lasting Legacy. These virtues: NEVER accidents & ALWAYS the result of deliberate effort.” Deliberate effort is the same as being “intentional.” To do quality work means you are mindful about the product or service you are producing. You have your customer and her expectations at the forefront. You

The Importance of Building a Culture

I read an article about building a culture that caused me to think about what we are doing in our company. It supports the idea of building a strong culture because people thrive in strong cultures. It’s good for us. It is what makes us human. According to Mark Pagel, an evolutionary biologist, we are “wired” for connection. Because we are “wired” for connection, we are attracted to people and teams that have similar goals,

Having a Great First Hour

I shared with you how important a “quick start” is every day. The second part of a “quick start” is focusing on having a “great first hour.” There is nothing worse than having a balky start with inconsistent results in the first hour. Once you get behind, it is difficult to make up ground. A bad first hour will cause a variety of things: unplanned overtime, multiple changeovers, a bad climate fueled by pressure and

THE JUICE IS WORTH THE SQUEEZE

“Everything you want is on the other side of ‘hard’.” – CJ McCollum, NBA player McCollum is a story of overachievement.  He was undersized.  Played college basketball at a non-descript school.  Was a long shot to be an NBA player but worked his way to being a first-round draft pick and was a solid star in his 10th year in the league. I heard him describe his approach to the game and his development on a podcast called

SUFFERING AND CHALLENGES

“Weep, trust, pray, think, shift, hope, grow. Ways to handle suffering.” – Tim Keller Tim Keller was a preacher from New York City. He passed away in 2023. I followed him on Twitter because he tweeted profound thoughts like the one above. You don’t exit life without tough things happening to you. It’s a fact. None of us are exempt. In specific order, Keller gave us seven verbs to consider when challenged: Weep – It’s
